SSUKM Presidential elections
Candidates are running the last round, students – uninterested observersOn 28th February there will be elections held for a new president of the Students’ Union of the University Ss. Cyril and Methodius (SSUKM) in Skopje. There are two candidates. The campaign has started. Parallel with their presentations, the non-governmental youth organization Youth Educational Forum (YEF) has raised an initiative for collecting signatures for a new model of students’ organizing – students’ parliament. Most of the students do not know that soon there will be elections held for a new students’ leader and they are not interested to go to elections. YEF did not call for a boycott against these elections, but in the students’ circles there are rumors that there will be small appearance of the voters. |  |

Projects for twinningFour civil society organizations from Macedonia have twinned with three associations from the European Union member-countries as part of the so-called EU Twinning NGO program, implemented through the European Commission – Directorate for Environment. The association “Eko svest” from Skopje twinned with “Millieukontakt Oost-Europa” from Holland; The Macedonian Environmental Association and The Association for Wild Flora and Fauna Protection from Kavadarci twinned with BVCF from Spain; and the Journalist Legal Enviro Centre “ERINA” from Skopje twinned with the “Kalisto” organization from Greece. |  |

To register, to document reality, to discover the big and small secrets of human work, was a big challenge for a group of young people aged 13-15, who have created six documentaries on old crafts in the Old Skopje Bazaar for the past four months. |  |
How will the latest tax amendments to the civil society organizations’ performance reflect?
Amendments to the Personal Income Tax Law IIIn the last months of 2006 the Government of the Republic of Macedonia initiated a series of amendments in the so-called tax legislation. As a result, the surroundings and working conditions of the economic subjects and civil society organizations will drastically change. That is why in the following few issues the Civic World shall explain the amendments to the existing laws on Tax Profit, Value Added Tax and the Personal Income Tax Law along with the beginning of application of the Law on Donations and Sponsorships and introduction of the so-called flat tax.

Responsibility for social issuesIn the issue 64 the Civic World started presenting parts of the publication “Trust, responsibility for social issues and charity in Macedonia”, published by the Macedonian Center for International Cooperation. The publication is, in fact, a report made on the basis of two questionnaires and the results of four focus-groups. Good newsIt happened. Skeptics did not have much time for spreading doubt in understanding the Government of the necessary relations with the civic sector, or in the civic sector’s capacity to fight for its place in the society. The government has adopted the Strategy, where it obliges to cooperation with the civic sector and developing and strengthening civil society organizations.

FOSIM Jubilee
15 Years of Strengthening the Civil Society and the DemocracyThe Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia (FOSIM) is marking 15 years of its establishment and 15 years’ work. As part of the foundation network of the Open Society Institute, the Foundation was established by George Soros in October 1992, as a representative office of a foreign legal entity. Since 1999, FOSIM has been registered as a national legal entity, in accordance with the Law for Civil Society Associations and Foundations in the Republic of Macedonia.
