15 Years of Strengthening the Civil Society and the Democracy
The Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia (FOSIM) is marking 15 years of its establishment and 15 years’ work. As part of the foundation network of the Open Society Institute, the Foundation was established by George Soros in October 1992, as a representative office of a foreign legal entity. Since 1999, FOSIM has been registered as a national legal entity, in accordance with the Law for Civil Society Associations and Foundations in the Republic of Macedonia.
FOSIM was one of the organizations that established the civil sector in the Republic of Macedonia, thus considerably raising our country’s level of democratization. With all its programs, FOSIM has promoted the civil society and the internal integration of Macedonia as one of the conditions for its integration in the EU. The philosophy and the essence of FOSIM mission remained unchanged until today – promoting the concept of open society in Macedonia.
At FOSIM they realize that determination through their five working priorities, which, according to the Managing Board resolution, were incorporated in their strategy for 2007. Those priorities are: mapping and scanning the state institutions, analyzing and promoting the good governance; Roma integration – in the programme areas of education, health care, civil society and economic reforms; Decentralization and development of the local democracy – in the programme areas of public administration, civil society and law reforms; Promotion of the European values and standards – in al programme areas; Strengthening the civil sector role as observer of the Governments transparency and reporting, FOSIM is going to mark its jubilee in accordance with the programme determinations and following the present events in the country throughout the year.
