Women Organization Sveti Nikole

Desire for mutual understanding

Sveti Nikole is a small community but it can be called a "small Balkans" because besides Macedonian, there live Vlach, Roma, Turkish, Serbian and other nationalities. This is where the Sveti Nikole Women Organization's idea to prepare a project for coexistence between Macedonians, Vlachs and Serbs came from. The organizations involved in the project are: Sveti Nikole Roma Organizations and the Civic Initiative for Vlach Women, in cooperation with the Open Society Institute Macedonia Foundation, the Belgian Foundation King Boduen and the American Foundation "Charles Stewart Mott". The goal of the project is mutual introducing with the cultural values of these people, as well as detailed information on the history, tradition, customs and their folklore.

-Although in this municipality there are no interethnic tensions, there is a need of closer understanding of each other's cultures - says the Sveti Nikole Women Organization president, Mrs. Vera Zlateva. For that purpose, several activities have been planned such as: organizing an art exhibition where various Macedonian, Vlach and Roma artists will exhibit their paintings, a mutual poetry evening, an exhibition of traditional, authentic handicrafts, folk performance and other similar activities. The project is going to last for 6 months.
