Polio Plus

The wheelchair is more than just an orthopaedic aid

On 7 July this year, the inter-party parliamentary lobby-group that represents the rights of people with special needs, initiated by the association Polio Plus, took part at the seminar called "What is a handicap?" at the Special Hospital for orthopaedics and traumatology "Saint Erasmus" in Ohrid.

The director of this hospital, Dr. Nikola Razmoski and the lobby-group president, Mrs. Liljana Popovska spoke at the seminar. The lectures were given by Mr. Rafael de Riedmaten from the "Handicap International" office for South-Eastern Europe. He spoke about the basic terms related to the handicap, the history of its treatment through time and space, using examples of successful integration and accepting the handicapped people in the some countries' social environment. Mr De Riedmaten also spoke about the basics and the directions of lobbying as a means for accomplishing certain political and other goals.
