History readers
Identical of history in the region
On 21 January this year, the foundation Open Society Institute – Macedonia organized the promotion of history readers in Macedonian and Albanian language. (about Macedonia). It is a product of the international project of the Democracy and Reconciliation Center of Southeastern Europe from Thessalonica, Greece, which has been implemented in the region since 1999. The history readers are part of the initiative called “Teaching Southeastern Europe’s modern history” and implemented by the above mentioned center. Their purpose is to serve as alternative teaching materials that will help the history teachers to enrich and improve the teaching of the subject primarily in the high schools. However, the history readers can also be used in the primary schools, even at universities.
FIOOM is the co-publisher of both, the publications in Macedonian and Albanian language for Macedonia. The readers have been prepared by experts from the region, who have worked together since 1999 and they correspond with the history curriculum from the region. The main topics they deal with are: the Ottoman Empery; nations and countries, Balkan Wars and The Second World War. The publications in Macedonian and in Albanian (for Macedonia) have been printed with support from the European Agency for Reconstruction and FIOOM.
Several people spoke on the importance of the readers at the promotion in Skopje, which attracted great interest with the Macedonian public, but also with the diplomatic core in the country: Erhard Busek-Southeast Europe Stability Pact Coordinator, Jovan Lazarovski – Vice-Minister of Education, Dr. Irena Stefkovska, Editor of the publication in Macedonian, PhD. Kristina Kuluri – Editor of the readers, PhD. Todor Cepreganov – Director of the Institute of National History and Mr. Vladimir Milcin – FIOOM Executive Director.
Besides in Macedonian and in Albanian, the readers have been published in Serbian, Croatian, Greek and Bosnian. The Japanese edition is expected to be published soon.
