Independence Day

Traditional climbing on Golem Korab

On 4 September 2005, the mountaineering-sport association “Korab” from Skopje organized the traditional international climbing on the highest mountaintop in Macedonia, Golem Korab (2,754m) on the Korab Mountain. For 14 years in a row, the mountaineers from our country mark the 8 September, the Independence Day of the Republic of Macedonia. In the last 2-3 years, there is a bigger international interest for participation at this event. Therefore, the climbing took place the weekend before the 8 September.

This year, there were over 1,000 mountaineers, 100 of them from 17 world countries. For the first time, there were participants from Ukraine, Uzbekistan and South Korea, and traditionally, there were mountaineers from Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland and Russia, together with the mountaineering associations from Macedonia. The number of 65 active associations points to the fact that mountaineering is one of the most popular sports in our country, All mountaineering associations operate as civil society organizations whose goal is to promote and develop the mountaineering in our country, to spread the love for the mountains and the nature, to encourage the environmental awareness, and as a sport, to reach as many high mountains as possible, not only in Macedonia, but also in other countries.

The mountaineering-sport association “Korab” from Skope, besides being the organizer of the action for climbing the top Golem Korab is one of the most active and most numerous mountaineering associations in our country. It has existed since 1997 and it has 200 active members. During one year, it organizes about 50 actions. Climbing the top Golem Korab went well this year, without any incidents or accidents. The ideal weather conditions helped climbing the not always predictable Korab. Since the top located in a border zone, the organizer was largely assisted by the border brigade of the Ministry of Interior.
