Initiative of EA “Eko-misija”

Park-woods Vodno – a pedestrian zone

In the eve of the local elections in Macedonia, the environmental association “Eko-misija” from Skopje raised an initiative for turning the Park-Woods Vodno into a pedestrian zone.  The initiative, as an appeal for banning the traffic and the car racing on Vodno, was handed to the City of Skopje and to the future Mayor of Skopje. “Eko-misija” sees the motives for this initiative in the continuous exposal of Vodno to human factor’s pressure, starting from the gradual spread of the city towards the mountain and decreasing the zone of protected nature, through stealing of trees, illegal hunting, causing fire, pollution caused by the rubbish left by the visitors, harmful gases from the cars moving up the mountain, inappropriate collection of various plants, taking fertile soil or stones for the private needs of the citizens, etc.

As biggest flaws in the systematic maintenance of the Park-Woods Vodno, “Eko-misija” states: the bad keeping service and the traffic allowed in the park-woods, as well as the lack of sanctions against the offenders.

“One thing that all city governments have failed to realize so far is the threat that the traffic presents to Vodno. Nothing has been done in that respect. We will appreciate the nobility of the mayor who will admit that flaw and make the historic move of proclaiming Vodno a pedestrian zone. The true lovers of nature will ask no more than that”, said Petar Bosevski, president of “Eko-misija”.

“Eko-misija” initiative was signed by several environmental, mountaineering and other civil society associations, several relevant professional and scientific state institutions, the mayors of the Skopje municipalities Karpos, Kisela Voda, Gorce Petrov, Gazi Baba and Cair, as well as 1260 polled visitors to Vodno.
