  Issue 74  People

Toni Bacvarovski

I would rearrange the distribution of the resources and the power more rightly

Professional experience: Information technician for over 12 years now. Seven-year working experience at Handicap International in Macedonia and Southeast Europe. President at the association “Otvorete gi prozorcite” for two years, specialty – access information equipment and software. At the moment I am attending computer science and information technology studies in the USA.

Engagement in the civil sector: Professionally employed at Handicap International – French civil society organization (1999-2006). Co-founder and first president of “Otvorete gi prozorcite”, Skopje; August 2005 – August 2007 – vice-president of the association.

Hobbies and interests: As to most of the people from my profession, computers are both – my job and my hobby. It must be so if you want to stay in the race. Apart from that, I am quite fond of mechanics, electrics and electronics.

Toughest decision: To leave Macedonia temporarily in order to finish the studies in the US.

Ambitions: To finish university in the States (UC Berkley, ideally), to do my internship at some of the access technology centers in the region around San Francisco and to become one of the experts in access technology for handicapped people in Europe.

In his free time he reads: Microsoft Server 2003, and if I have more free time, I read something “light” that I find or that someone recommends. At the moment I am reading “How to be good” by Nick Hornby.

Where does he go in his free time: In the States I walk around and see what is on offer at what they call here “buy area” – all the towns around the San Francisco Bay.

At weekends: In Skopje I was trying to finish all the personal/private things which I neglected during the week. But here in the US, I search the surrounding.

Which national/local problem does he find especially important and why: People being passive, although we have excellent civil society organizations and wonderful people working for them. The general population does not understand and does not use its power to make changes in the society and life as a whole. We just let things run their course, following the motto “it is how it was supposed to be”

Which global problem does he find especially important and why: The intolerance between nations, races, religions and so on. The differences become a reason for conflicts and problems, not a reason for cooperation and development.

What would he change in Macedonia and the world: In Macedonia I would change the assets and the way of informing. As far as the world is concerned – well, it is to big a bite for, there is a lot to be changed, but if I could, I would rearrange the distribution of the resources and the power more rightly.

Advice/message: I do not have some special advice, but in this occasion, I will use a piece from one the people I respect most: Try not to be a person of success, but rather a person of value (Albert Einstein).

I could never: There is a lot I could never do, but generally, I would never do things to others that I don’t want be done to me.
