Informative caravan

The Monster-Tomato warned on the danger of GMO

In the month of July, the civil society organization Eko-Svest and Friends of the Earth Europe – FoEE) realized “The Tomato – Monster Tour” in several towns in Macedonia. The project had been envisaged and realized as an informative caravan on genetically modified organisms – GMO. The organizers, joined by  6-metre-tall tomato showing its monster teeth, informed the public in Ohrid, Bitola, Veles, Strumica and Skopje on what GMO are and what are the risks of their consumption, as well as the already familiar negative effects of growing crops and using GMO products with examples from all over the world. Growing GMO has a significant negative effect on farmers, with direct threat to their existence. According to the organizers from Eko-Svest, the Tomato Monster Tour tended to explain the current situation and the growing risks of raising and letting enter GMO in Macedonia.

“GMO is an unknown topic for the Macedonian public. The transgenetic plants obtained with unnatural modifications increase the risks and influence the natural environment and the human health in a negative way. Macedonia has not passed a Law on GMO yet, which means that there is no mechanism established that would prevent the GMO from entering the country”, they inform at Eko-Svest. According to them, one of the goals of the Tomato Monster Tour is to promote the idea for declaring the free GMO zones on the territory of Macedonia. The citizens from the five towns were signing a petition against letting GMO enter the country. The petition is to be submitted to the corresponding institutions, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy.

The event was financed by Global Greengrants Fund and its goal is to raise the awareness on the risks and the negative effects of using GMO on the environment and the human health. Tomato Monster Tours were organized in the month of July in Romania and Bulgaria as well.
