Children! Children! Children!

This is a very delicate topic. I cannot understand those that abuse the children. Here, I mean any kind of abuse – starting from abusing the children labor to the various parades for all purposes. I believe we all agree on the former, and on the letter it depends on how each one of us feels about it. For both of these aspects of children abuse there are conventions, regulations and laws that control them. Using children for various purposes is a double edged weapon. For some it can be justified, but not for others. Than, it is the motive that counts – whether there had been any hidden intentions or not. And that is what we need the conventions for – to regulate the children’s rights and to make us act according to the existing laws.

A while ago, The Children Embassy for All Children from Prilep organized the campaign for the Macedonian access into NATO under the motto “Macedonia in the NATO – with the children as its treasure”. The patron of the event was the Macedonian Minister of Defence, Lazar Elenovski. To this, the First Children Embassy in Macedonia “Medjashi” expressed a severe criticism sending a complaint to the Ombudsman, in which they blame the above mentioned organization from Prilep for abusing children for political and military purposes in their campaign. They ask for the Minister Elenovski to resign and to remove the Children Embassy for all Children from the Register of civil society organizations and associations.

Were the children abused at this event or not? So far (for what I know) the only subjects that reacted were "Medjashi" (who have been working with children for over 15 years now) and the Ombudsman. We still do not know what the others think, though there seem to be certain reactions regarding this matter within the civil sector.

Should the Children Embassy for All Children be removed from the Register of civil society organizations and associations? That is what "Medjashi" are requesting, but it is up to the authorities to decide.

There have always been and there will always be discussions on abusing children for various purposes. I would like to invite FCEW “Medjashi” and The Children Embassy for All Children to organize one on that matter and together with the other civil society organizations, state institutions, lawyers, etc. to express their stands on: when and whether we are allowed to “use” the children for different purposes.

As for now, it is left to or own interpretation.
