Macedonia involved in the Small Grants Programme
“The application for including the Republic of Macedonia in the Small Grants Programme of the Global Environment Facility/Fund, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative, has been accepted”, reported in the beginning of this year the United Nations Development Office. In the following period, a national coordinator is to be elected and a national committee is to be established as an approach to the preparation of the National Strategy of RM in this sphere. The call for grants will be announced in the first half of this year.
The Global Environment Facility/Fund was established in 1991. Its objective is to help the developing countries finance the projects and the programmes for environmental protection. It approves support to projects related to the biodiversity, the climate changes, international waters, degradation of the land, the ozone layer and the permanent organic polluters. GEF is an independent financial organization, which provides grants for environment and promotion of the sustainable development. Since 1991, it has provided 4. 5 billion dollars in grants, and 14.5 billion dollars have been collected from co-financing with other partners in the project in developing countries and the countries in economic transition.
In 2002, 32 donor-countries involved in GEF, promised 3 billion dollars for financing the planned activities in the period between 2002 and 2006.
