Albania

Albania has prepared a programme directed towards the fight against HIV/AIDS

Albania prepared itself for a six-year national strategy directed towards the fight against HIV/AIDS. The Ministry of Health is in charge of this project, which is sponsored by UNDP, and assistance to the project will be offered by experts from the other ministries, international organizations and non-governmental organizations. The accent will be placed upon the prevention from diseases and the healing of the diseased. The second issue is of great relevance due to the high prices of the medicines.

Official sources confirm that the Ministry has started buying medicines for healing the infected, and add that 25 individuals of the total number of infected need an immediate treatment. The Government announced that it would assign 126 million euros for healing.

According to the data that were announced on the World Anti-AIDS Day in 2003, there are 116 people in Albania who are infected with HIV or have AIDS. Five of them are children under 15. About 40 people have died of AIDS so far in Albania.
