Civic movement – Wake up! – Skopje

On 18 October 2006 in Skopje, the civic movement “Wake up!” is organizing the tribune called “Inter-political party dialogue – the way forward”. Participants at the tribune are the leaders of the political parties in Macedonia and international community representatives.

“Why can we only pass the road to NATO and the road to becoming members of the European Union by means of open dialogue between all political factors and institutions” – was the topic of the tribune attended by the Prime Minister and President of VMRO-DPMNE, Mr. Nikola Gruevski, the DUI President, Ali Ahmeti, Vlado Buckovski – ex-president of SDSM and the Ambassador, Erwan Fuere – special EU representative and President of the European Comission Delegation in Macedonia. During the month of October, the civic movement representatives sent an appeal through the media to the Members of the Parliament to wake up, i.e., to judge the violent rhetoric practiced by some in the Parliament.

The first public appearance of this civic movement was in May this year, when its members, together with the Skopje citizens went on to a protest called “Wake up and say no to guns”, expressing their protest against killing the young boys at an Internet-cafe in Cair, Skopje. The goals of this association, which attracted the public attention in the past few months are the following: to articulate the Skopje citizens’ voice regarding their needs and expectations by developing and promoting their political, economic and social status in the society; to promote their cultural values and activities; to contribute to the pupils, students and citizens’ educational process by promoting educational values; to serve as a forum for promoting ideas, expert discussion and exchange of opinions for its members; to influence the establishment and promotion of the civil society in the town, as well as to contribute, in cooperation with all interested in the activities for re-animating the trade and the cultural life in the Old Skopje Bazaar.

Among its goals we can mention the active support of sport associations, its contribution in the campaigns against drug abuse, alcoholism, human trafficking, raising the awareness on issues regarding the environmental protection, etc. Creating better and safer environment in the municipality of Cair is one of the associations’ projects, realized in July this year and supported by the UNDP. “Wake up!” has also organized a musical event (a concert) that took place in June in the Old Skopje Bazaar.
