Mentorship and civic organizations

In Macedonia mentor opportunities are unused 

Odysseus, the famous astute hero from the Homer’s epic poem “Odyssey”, before going into Trojan’s war commits the care for his family and property to Mentor, his best friend and a man of trust, wise, experienced and conscientious. Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, becomes Mentor’s pupil and he teaches him and leads him through life. So, the term mentor origins from here and it means an experienced person, teacher, educator, tutor, adviser, consultant who invests his/her knowledge and experience to help building and training professionals from a certain field.

The term mentorship is derived from the term mentor and it implies a sustainable relation (link) between two people, one offering support, and leadership to the other. Most often it is a relation between an older person (mentor) and a younger person (student).

There are several definitions on mentorship:

·      Mentorship is a behavior and a process when a person gives help, directs, advises, helps in training and development of another person.
·      Mentorship is a relation between an experienced and a less experienced person, where the mentor provides informing, advising, support and feedback for the student, as a way of helping him in personal development.
·      Mentorship can be seen as a partnership between two free independent sides that are equal and where power and authority are used wisely in a function of a challenge, opportunity, encouragement and help.

Mainly there are three types of mentorship: natural or traditional mentorship, planned mentorship and self-mentorship.

·        Natural mentorship implies that relations between the mentor and the student are mainly based upon friendship and cooperativeness.  This kind of mentorship includes social interaction between the mentor and the student.
·        Planned mentorship is a part of structured programs where the mentor and the student are involved on the grounds of formal requests in order to achieve a certain goal, most often increasing productivity and decreasing current problems in the organization.
·        Self-mentorship as a special kind of mentorship is different from the previous two types because in this case there is not a direct relation between the student with one mentor. In this case student by following various examples and procedures in the environment, as well as through a research work, self-educates himself. This type of mentorship requires big motivation and self-discipline.

Mentorship and mentor programs mainly serve to achieve the following wider goals:

·      Educational or academic mentorship, which is focused advancement of academic achievements of mainly young people involved in the educational process;
·      Mentorship in the career development, which helps the mentored one to advance the necessary skills in order to start or to continue his own career development;
·      Mentorship in personal development, which helps the mentored one to overcome situations on a professional, personal and social challenge and leads him through the process of making decisions.

Introduction into...work is a process of learning, through a planned training program that enables the newly employed to meet the organization, their colleagues, their work, as well as the work of other organizations or agencies that work in a similar way.

Monitoring the work and the working achievements of the individual in the organization (employed, volunteer) it is a review of what he has done, how he has done it and what is to be done.

Evaluation of the working achievements implies checkout of meeting the expectations and working standards, that is, whether the individuals have done their job well, what are their strengths and weaknesses and what steps will be taken into future.
