The Green Coalition asks for the Veles smeltering factory to be dislocated
On 17 January this year, the representatives from the civil society organizations from Veles, organized in the so-called Green Coalition, met with the members of the Municipality Council whom they asked to make conditions for speeding up their initiative to change the general town-planning, that is to dislocate the lead and zinc smeltery.
Due to the information regarding the potential restart of the smeltery, Nenad Kocikj from the Green Coalition explained the associations are not against the economic prosperity of the town, but the cost of it should not be the people’s health. Five years after the smeltery had closed, Veles inhabitants still suffer the consequences of the past. More than 90 percent of its inhabitants think that the only solution for the town is the dislocation of the factory 18 kilometers away from the town to the south, near the factory for artificial fertilizers. Dimce Velev, another member of the Green Coalition, submitted an initiative to the Government asking for funds to be allocated for dislocating the factory.
So far, the Government has not allocated any funds to ???? the citizens over the consequences they suffered from the pollution the smeltery caused in the 30 years of its work. However, now is the time to recuperate the past mistakes and protect the future of the Veles inhabitant”, Velev said. Angelce Gusev, also a member of the Green Coalition, announced public protests to prevent the potential restart of the factory.
