Awards for civil society and democracy and sustainable development

MCIC Announces the Laureates for This Year

The Macedonian Centre for International Cooperation (MCIC) yesterday evening (8 June), at the hotel Holiday Inn, announced the winners of the Civic Society and Democracy Award and the Sustainable Development Award “Gert Jan van Apeldoorn”.

The winners of the Civic Society and Democracy Award are: Ace Kocevski for long continuing contribution, the European movement in Republic of Macedonia for achievements in the last year and OW “Radika” for cooperation.

The Macedonian Centre for International Cooperation (MCIC) introduced the Civic Society and Democracy Award and the Sustainable Development Award “Gert Jan van Apeldoorn” in order to acknowledge the courage and the commitment by many people and organizations in supporting the democratic values, the civic society and the sustainable development.

This year has been the fourth year in a row for this celebration to take place. The award winners are an excellent example and a source of inspiration for all of us. What has been achieved so far wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution by many men and women dedicated to supporting the democracy, the civic society and the sustainable development. We are well aware that those processes are a long way of being concluded, rather they are in their opening phase.

This brochure has been prepared in order to honour the award winners. The aim of this ceremony is to grant acknowledgement to the award winners for their activities in the society.

Mr. Ace Kocevski is the winner of the Civic Society and Democracy Award for long continuing contribution. The award has been granted for, primarily, his contribution to the development of the civic society through enhancing the participation of the citizens in the decision-making processes and the processes of their concern, on individual or collective basis. He was also awarded for his contribution to the development of the good conduct through strengthening the local self-government. Ace Kocevski being a member of the Parliament, a civil servant and currently a Mayor makes significant contribution to the inclusion of the citizens in the decision-making processes. One of the most notable engagements is his support to the citizens of Veles to voice their stand in regard to the MHK Zletovo issues. Along with the local civic organizations “The Parents’ Society for Healthy Children”, “The Parents’ Association of the Children suffering from cerebral paralysis” and “The Message” have been working on tackling the biggest ecological problem in Veles (and in Macedonia as well). In that direction, they have brought the problem to the attention of the highest level governmental institutions and at an international level as well, have undertaken concrete activities for improvement of the quality of the living environment in Veles. Ace Kocevski, as a public servant and mayor, gave significant contribution to the strengthening of the local self-government and the decentralization processes. Veles has been proclaimed a “municipality that should serve as an example” mainly because all the decentralization pilot projects have been implemented in Veles.

The European Movement in Republic of Macedonia (EMRM) is the winner of the Civic Society and Democracy Award for the contribution made in the last year. The award has been granted as an appreciation for the contribution made to the development of the civic society mainly through strengthening the human capacities, thus enabling the citizens to recognize their personal values and priorities and organize themselves so as to make the most of that. EMRM in 2003 made a major contribution to the affirmation of the European idea and the Euro-integrations in Macedonia through the implementation of the following projects: “Europe – our future” (two-weeks manifestations throughout Macedonia upon the occasion of the 9-th of May – the Day of Europe) and the European Week in the high schools – “As we learn more about Europe and the European Union we get to know ourselves better”. In June, 2003, EMRM initiated and organized the international event of the Presidents of the European Movements in the South-eastern Europe countries. The aim of the event was to improve the cooperation in regard to the Euro-integration processes and it was concluded with the adoption of the joint Resolution in advance of the EU Summit in Thessalonica.

OW “Radika” is the winner of the Civic Society and Democracy Award for cooperation. The award has been granted to acknowledge the contribution to the establishment of networks, exchanges, links, communication between the organizations in the civic sector and the state and private sector as well. The OW “Radika” made a contribution to the building of networks, exchanges, communication with the communities (12 branches) and the Municipality of Rostushe and the Macedonian Women Lobby. OW “Radika” is operating in an extremely passive area (the Rekan region).

Violeta Tomovska is the winner of the award for promotion of the human development, through the local and national initiatives in the sectors like the education, the health protection and the social care. Mrs. Violeta Tomovska in a role of a president of the civic organization “Zivotna Iskra”, furthermore actively cooperating with numerous civic organizations, as well as for her personal experience is a person that deserves to get credit. She has been actively engaged in the initiatives for providing support to the women suffering from breast cancer. Those initiatives have primarily been directed towards the struggle for prevention and reducing the number of sufferers.

Dr. Arch. Mihail Tokarev is the winner of the award for support and promotion of the development that leads to long-term results beneficial to the people and the environment without any obligations and imbalances for the next generations to be left behind. Mihail Tokarev has been actively advocating the implementation of the endurable development in RM since 1989, not only in the area of the environmental protection, but also in the area of restoring the architectural heritage, the cultural-historic and natural heritage. He has been the major initiator and the first president of DEM, in the period when the movement was enlarged from 10+3 to 20+6 members and the international activities for protection of the Dojran and Ohrid Lake, and few years later for the Prespa Lake, were in place.

“The Special Olympiad” – Macedonia is the winner of the award for support and promotion of the rights of the individuals and the groups of people to participate, contribute and enjoy in the continuous economic, social, cultural and political development, and be able to fulfil their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In the course of 2003, “The Special Olympiad” initiated a campaign for engaging the people with mental handicap in the everyday life through getting them involved in sport activities. So far more than 600 people have been included.

“Give pleasure to your boss!!!”
These days, a new commercial about a new coffee brand appeared on TV. I presume you’ve already seen it. A secretary slips when bringing coffee to her boss, slides down his desk on her stomach to stop in front of him with the coffee in her hand? I am not sure how you react to it, but after I had seen it for the first time I was left with my mouth open. It was a mixed feeling of bewilderment, sickness, disbelief…how could somebody think of something like that? How could nobody react to this commercial?
“Mesecina” and “Arka” work on registering adults
People are born for the second time after obtaining personal documents
Bari, Alisa, Dzejlan and a list of other names are just some of the examples for successful work of the Roma information centers of the humanitarian organization Mesecina from Gostivar. Despite being adults, they have recently been given their first birth certificate and have practically been born for the second time.
Civic resistance for the restarting of the melting plant in Veles
The Green Coalition insists on dislocating the polluter
It was so alive on 16 February in Veles! The event “Veleska pastrmajlija” was taking place at the pizza-bar “Snoopy”. The event has a special purpose – collecting money for the Children Ward at the Town Hospital. The action was organized by the “Focus” Foundation, in cooperation with the municipality of Veles.

Our vision is a quality space for better life
We decided to make an unusual interview with three people, as they themselves are unusual, as well as the association they are members of. Aleksandra Kapetanovic, Biljana Gligorovic and Tatjana Rajic are three young architects, who dedicate their creativity, knowledge and enthusiasm to cultural heritage, architecture, spatial planning and the civic sector in Montenegro, particularly focused on Boka Kotorska and its surroundings.

My attitude towards the language
“People who are of the same origin and who speak the same words and who live and make friends of each other, who have the same customs and songs and entertainment are what we call a nation, and the place where that people lives is called the people's country. Thus the Macedonians also are a nation and the place which is theirs is called Macedonia.”
Armenian community in the Republic of Macedonia
About 110 families cherish both the Armenian and the Macedonian culture
The genesis of the Armenian communities on the territory of today’s Macedonia goes back to the medieval times as can be proved by the numerous papers, traveling notes by foreign travelers who stayed or passed through the towns where among other nations, lived the Armenians.
