Association for helping the socially marginalized people – “Scorpio”

“You and me against the family violence”

The Association for helping the socially marginalized people and the risk groups “Scorpio”, in cooperation with the women organizations “Kitka”, “Orhideja”, “ZE-NA” and the Centre for children and young people and the Civic Association “Fathers for Justice”, organized the educational tribune “You and me against the family violence”. The following people spoke at the tribune: Dusko Minovski, state secretary at the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, Lence Mihajloska from the Social Works Centre from Prilep and Divna Zmejkova from the Women Organization from Skopje. Even though so far the family violence has been treated as a taboo-theme, lately it is being spoken about more openly. In that direction was the information regarding the work of the National SOS-line for helping the victims of family violence. “The number of calls has increased”, said Zmejkova. “Most often, we receive calls from women aged up to 40 who have been maltreated by their husbands or fathers in law. Since 2005, we have received calls from about 1500 people”, she added. We need more educational campaigns and providing emotional and moral support to the victims, health services, legal assistance, punishing the perpetrators, etc.

A review has been made on the legal regulation that covers the family violence. The Law on Family and the Criminal Code that deal with the family violence, provide great legal security and protect the victims of violence, and the increased fines can lead towards preventing the potential perpetrators from performing violent acts against their families.
