Gender concept and the media
On 18 April at the Deputes' Club in Skopje, he project, the Union of Macedonia Women Organizations (UMWO) organized a seminar for evaluating the media monitoring with journalists and editors from the press and electronic media in the Republic of Macedonia. The seminar was part of the project called " Women and the media".
The goal of this meeting was to enable the journalists and their editors present the results of their media's monitoring, that is, give their evaluations on how much gender concept (that is women) is present in the media, in which column or show, how often and in which context. The participants discussed the mechanisms of greater women participation in the media editorial policy.
"This activity was initiated at the last parliamentary pre-election campaigns, when we organized a round table on the visibility, that is, invisibility of women in the media. Participants were many journalists from different media in the country, intellectuals, women-politicians, etc., and the conclusion was that journalists have no sense or sensibility for the gender concept in the media. In order to change that, we made a selection of journalists from all over Macedonia and implemented several trainings on gender issues and one of the journalists' tasks was to monitor their media in terms of women participation in the media. We are hearing the results now", said Svetlana Cvetkovska, assistant of the Women Political Strengthening Programme in UMWO.
Evaluators were Biljana Bejkova from the Institute of Media and Vesna Jovanovska from the Association for Women Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality and in the end, the recommendations and conclusions were presented by Gordana Stosik, director of the Macedonian Radio and Television.
