New MCIC's laureates announced

Supporting positive examples around us

For the third time, the civic organizations’ activities, individuals, institutions, companies and other entities in our society, have been given the Award for Civil Society and Democracy or the Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn”, for their last year achievements. The aim of these awards is to initiate their courage and engagement, but also to present positive examples and things happening around us

Mr. Boge Chadinovski, “Alkaloid” from Skopje, A1 TV, Macedonian Women Lobby, Ecological Association “Rosa” from Chaska and civic association “Natira” from Otlja, Lipkovo – each in its own way, deserved the Award for Civil Society and Democracy and the Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn”, traditionally given by the Macedonian Center for International Cooperation, for their last year achievements and long-term contribution. The presentation of the awards took place in the Skopje hotel Holiday Inn and there were a lot of guests and journalists, every year more and more interested in it, since this is a unique award of this kind. As Mr. Saso Klekovski, MCIC executive manager said, these awards are recognition of the courage and dedication of a lot of citizens and organizations in building and supporting democratic values, civic society and sustainable development. The awards are given by the fund created by MCIC, after it had been given very prestigious recognition – the Award for Democracy and Civil Society, by the European Union and the USA in 1998.

For the third time, the civic organizations’ activities, individuals, institutions, companies and other entities in our society, have been given these awards for their last year achievements. Their aim is to initiate their courage and engagement, but also to present positive examples and things happening around us.


Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn” for long-term contribution – Boge Chadinovski
Supporting handicapped people’s rights

Mr. Boge Chadinovski has been given the Award for promotion and support of the right for sustainable development, for promoting and supporting handicapped people’s rights to take part, to contribute and to enjoy continuous economic, social, cultural and political development, thus completely realizing their human rights and fundamental freedom. Mr. Boge Chadinovski contributes to the involvement and cooperation with the civic organizations.
Mr. Boge Chadinovski has contributed to other spheres, too, especially in the coordination of the humanitarian response to the crises in 1999 and 2001.

Profile
Mr. Boge Chadinovski was born in 1943 in the village of Burinec, Struga. He graduated special education to handicapped people at the University in Zagreb in 1978. He worked as a teacher to handicapped people in the Bureau for protection and rehabilitation of children and youths – Skopje, from 1968 to 1980. He has been working in the Ministry of Health and Social Policy, now Ministry of Labor and Social Policy since 1981, working on social protection issues, especially on improvement and also development of people with special needs. He has contributed to the laws for children’s protection; social protection; handicapped people’s employment; civic invalids from the war; the National strategy for equaling handicapped people’s rights in the Republic of Macedonia etc. He ran the National Humanitarian Coordination in 2001.

 

Award for Civil Society and Democracy for public and informing and/or cooperation – CA “Natira”
Strengthening the cooperation in the civic sector 

The Macedonian Center for International Cooperation has given the civic association “Natira” from the village of Otlja, Lipkovo, the Award for civic society and democracy for public and informing and/or cooperation. “Natira” has been given the award for public and informing and/or cooperation for building relations, networks, exchanges, communication among the civic sector organizations with both the state and private sector. “Natira” has contributed to increasing and strengthening the cooperation in the civic sector (the Regional NGO Resource Center Kumanovo) with the municipalities of Kumanovo and Lipkovo and the local communities in Lipkovo.

Profile
The civic association “Natira”, the village of Otlja, Lipkovo, was founded in 1997. Its aim is a scientific-research, applicative and educational mission in the sphere of economy and sociology of the environmental protection. It is active in the region of Lipkovo-Kumanovo. So far achievements: building a water supply in the village of Otlja and confidence-building activities.


Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn” for last year achievements – AD Alkaloid
Production in harmony with the nature

The AD Alkaloid has been given the Award for sustainable development, for promoting and supporting sustainable development, where resources exploitation, investments direction, orientation of technological development and institutional change are in harmony and enable the present and future potentials to meet human needs and aspirations.

Alkaloid, putting into practice the environmental strategy and policy, as well as the Action plan for environmental protection, is the first company that started implementing the standards for environment management in Macedonia and it is an example of a positive approach in environmental aspects resolution.

Profile
Alkaloid in 2002:
-         It was given the certificate for Environment Management System (EMS) according to ISO 14001 for PC Pharmacy (for PC herbs-growing in 2000);
-         By the official completion and putting into function two new pharmaceutical factories, some relevant investment steps from the mentioned plan were realized: modern systems for adaptation, stations for discovering of dangerous gases; systems for production of high-quality technological water, complete equipment which provides efficient fire-fighting protection;
-         It started the Project for phase leaving CFC 11/12 in the production of aerosols, which is a part of the National programme for protection of the ozone layer. In 2002, a great number of employees took part at seminars and workshops from the sphere of environment management and protection. The joint stock company Alkaloid cooperates with the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.


Award for Civil Society and Democracy for last year achievements – Macedonian Women Lobby
For overcoming gender differences

The Macedonian Center for International Cooperation has given the Macedonian Women Lobby the Award for Civil Society and Democracy for last year achievements.
The Macedonian Women Lobby has been given the award for promotion and protection of human rights, for promotion and protection of women’s rights. It has contributed to a change in the legal regulation for election of members of parliament (article 7 in the Law for election of members of parliament), thus providing an obligatory gender quota of 30%. It has contributed to increasing women’s participation in politics and public life by increasing the number of women in the Parliament from 6,6% in 1998 to 18,3% (22 to 120) in 2002. MWL’s is yet bigger because women, working together, have succeeded in overcoming their political, religious and ethnic differences, uniting around issues of common interest.

Profile
Macedonian Women Lobby was founded on 1 March 2000, as an informal group of women of various structures (NGOs, political parties, governmental structures, media, trade union, independent intellectuals), with different ethnic, religious and political choice. Its aim is bigger women’s participation in politics and public life, especially at decision-making places and gender equality in all segments of social life. Their so far achievements are: a campaign for more elected women at the local elections 2000 (50 % more elected counselors and first three mayors); donor conferences for women NGOs projects in 2000 and 2001 (supported by the Open Society Institute – Macedonia and UNDP); a campaign for more elected women at the parliamentary elections 2002; forming a Club of parliamentarians in March 2003 and other activities.

 

Award for Civil Society and Democracy for long-term contribution – A1 TV
Promotion of independent and responsible media

The Macedonian Center for International Cooperation has given A1 TV the Award for Civil Society and Democracy for long-term contribution.
A1 TV has been given the award for supporting democracy and good governance, supporting independent and responsible media and freedom of the press. A1 is the first independent TV station, which started the process of pluralisation in the media in 1993. A1 has contributed to strengthening the responsibility of the public, private and civic sector.
A1, especially with its informative program, has contributed to promotion and protection of human rights, supporting non-violent conflict resolutions, especially the conflict in Macedonia in 2001, in establishing fair and democratic elections.
In 2000, the A1 Informative Program was given the award for objective informing, by the Macedonian Journalists’ Association.

Profile
A1 started broadcasting on 22 January 1993. Its aims are: reporting promptly and on time, real information and professionalism. They are based on: courage – informative approach based on impartiality, independence, objectiveness, truth, independence in working; creativity – opportunity for copyright expressing (projects and ways of expressing for the first time applied in the country); viewers – those for which this medium exists and whose opinion is basis for its work.


Award for Civil Society and Democracy for Public and Informing and/or Cooperation – EA “Rosa”
Development of the local community

The Macedonian Center for International Cooperation has given the Ecological Association “Rosa” from the village of Chaska the Award for Civil Society and Democracy for Public and Informing and/or Cooperation.
“Rosa” has been given the award for public and informing and/or cooperation for building relations, networks, exchanges, communication among the civic sector organizations with both the state and the private sector. Rosa has realized the community’s Action plan establishing a civic committee consisting of citizens of the municipality of Chaska, members of the NGO sector, local self-government and private sector.

Profile
The ecological association “Rosa” from Chaska was founded on 25 June 1997 and it was registered on 20 January 1999. Its aim is education for better environment and making conditions for better living. Its so far achievements are: “STOP” to international tensions; “Clean environment”; “Tear”; “Tree-lined path”; “Let’s step forward” and some other programs.

Winners of the Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn” in 2001, for previous year achievements were the Holding Company “Comuna” AD Skopje and the civic organization “Polio Plus” from Skopje.

Winners of the Award for Sustainable Development “Gert Jan Van Apeldoorn” in 2000 were Mr. Josif Tanevski for long-term contribution and Mrs. Christina Dickinson for previous year achievements.

Winners of the Award for Civic Society and Democracy in 2001 were the Foundation Open Society Institute - Macedonia, for long-term contribution and HDZR Mesechina Gostivar, for previous year achievement. The award for public and informing and/or cooperation was given to the City of Skopje.

Winner of the Award for Civil Society and Democracy in 2000 was the First Children’s Embassy in the world Medjashi, for long-term contribution.
