High level of tolerance towards domestic violence
“Out of about 800 cases of domestic violence reported in the Center for Social Work throughout Republic of Macedonia, only 80 requests for taking protective measures have been submitted to courts”, accused the Association for Protection Against Domestic Violence. A few civil society organizations, supported by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, on 25 November, at the square “Macedonia” in Skopje, started the campaign “Doors of the System”, as part of the world campaign that calls the states to provide enough funds and sanctify domestic violence. The action was organized in the eve of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – 26 November. “Only 20 percent of the total number of reported cases of domestic violence has ended with criminal charges, which is too high a level of tolerance of domestic violence by state institutions”, pointed out the association “Akcija Zdruzenska”. Out of all reported cases of domestic violence, the Ministry of Interior have brought criminal charges against 20 cases only and most of the criminal charges that have ended in court have been put on probation, they say in the association “Akcija Zdruzenska”, where they add that institutions have neither taken any temporary measures for protection of victims of domestic violence, such as ban to be nearby, expelling from the house or confiscating weapons.
