Citizens for Citizens

Public authorities' responsibilities

On 5 March, at the Deputes' Club in Skopje, a public discussion on " Public authorities' responsibilities" took place. It was organized by the "Citizen for Citizen" coalition, and supported by the Open Society Institute Macedonia Foundation and the Conrad Adenauer Foundation.

The goal of this discussion was to eliminate any element of doubt in the regularity of acts and procedures, and the expert analysis was to explain the legal procedures and possibilities for sanctioning the public authorities' illegal activities.

-         We are not here to judge the politicians, that will be done by the voters who

gave them their support. We are here to send a message to the politicians: did you fulfill your duty? Politicians should be an example for the citizens, said Mr. Andreas M. Klein from the Conrad Adenauer Foundation.

The reason for organizing the Discussion was that every day, the public faces with information on abusing the authorities' professional duties and authorities. The organizers say that sanctions for punishing and preventing all illegal and criminal act that the media have been informing about in the past period, have lacked so far. According to them, the public opinion is divided, there is a lack of certain information, and some circles consider these events to be political revenge.

One of the participants at the discussion, Professor Pande Lazarevski from the Institute for Sociological and Political -Legal Science, commented this occurrence with the non-professionalism of our politicians:

-         In our country, as well as in the neighborhood, the professionalism in political

decision-making is least taken care of. There are no professional politicians, trained for that problem. This training has to occur in Macedonia as quickly as possible, he said.

About twenty experts in different fields took part in the discussion: legal experts, public prosecutor's office representatives, representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ombudsman, the public prosecutor and his deputy, diplomats, judges, professors, etc.
