Macedonian UN Model

Practical Learning about the Democracy and the Parliament

From 12 to 14 December 2003, the Macedonian UN Model - MUNM held its sixth conference, where about 600 high school students simulated the work of 4 UN Committees - the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Development Programme and the World Health Organization. In a very practical way, the young people learned how these bodies function, about the decision making process and about how to practice democracy, diplomacy, negotiation, leadership, mediation, lobbying, teamwork.

At the same time they learned about the actual world processes and problems. They learned how to use the parliamentary rules for discussion and how to solve conflicts in a peaceful manner.

This MUNM project was supported by OSCE and the British Embassy, and it was sponsored by the British Council in Macedonia through awarding prices for the best "delegates".

At its conferences where they simulate the work of the world organization, however, the MUNM tends to educate the young people and encourage them to be "ambassadors" from different countries, thus learning the history, the culture and the present state of the countries they represent.
