Common action of human rights associations from 15 countries
Petition organized by HOPS
Human rights associations from 15 countries on 30 November started collecting signatures for petition for recognizing violence against sexual workers and its sanctioning as a criminal act. The initiative, that will last from 1 December – World AIDS Day until 10 December – Human Rights Day, is to point out the relation between human rights and HIV/AIDS spread.
On this occasion the citizens’ association HOPS – Options for Healthy Life, pointed out the facts that prostitution is illegal in many countries, that sexual workers do not have any access to education about HIV-infection and its effective prevention. “They have no access to HIV-tests, free condoms, medical treatment or counseling. HIV-infection often results from violence and sexual workers are subject to beating, raping, blackmailing, kidnapping, selling and buying in human trafficking” – states the HOPS statement, where, among other things, it is stated that “the police does not protect these people, on the contrary, most often it blackmails them, asks sexual services from them and uses the condoms they find at them as a proof against them”.
