The British Council
Seven decades of spreading the horizons
The British Council is celebrating seven decades of its establishment. This organization was established in order to make cultural exchange between the United Kingdom and Scotland and the other countries in the world. At the moment, the British Council has its offices in 110 countries, among which the Republic of Macedonia. Within its activities, this organization relates the countries in the field of culture, education and science.
The British Council was established on 5 November 1934 as British Council for relations with other countries. It was part of the efforts to stop the flow of fascism in that period in Europe. In these seven decades, the British Council has remained independent from the government and it has grown to be an international organization for spreading the education and the cultural relations.
The British Council was registered as a charity organization and it operates as a non-departmental public body. These type of organizations in Britain are independent from the government, but under certain ministerial authority.
The British Council is guided in its work by the idea of the internationalism and is stimulated by strong dedication, enthusiasm and creativity. Due to all that, the motto of the British Council is "Opening of doors - spreading the horizons".
