A survey
The civil sector does not see the public as a potential source of finances
Seventy percent of the Macedonian citizens have donated at least once for the needs of the community, mostly helping individuals. The fact that Macedonian poverty is not an obstacle for the Macedonian philanthropy is proved by the information that only 42% of the surveyed state the lack of finances as a reason for not donating for humanitarian purposes. The data were collected at the recent survey organized by the Institutional Development Centre (CIR) and the independent research company BSC Estec within the USAID project for strengthening the civil society.
Although the NGO sector cannot rely on foreign donations as it could in the past, due to the “extinction” of foreign money flow, CIR and BCS Estec’s survey show that the civil organizations are still unwillingly referring to the local public for donations and do not see it as a potential source of finances. Only 5% say they have donated for a civil society organization, although half of the surveyed say they would donate for the civil sector.
However, the fact that communication between the civil sector and the general public is somehow losing on intensity is proved by the information that 76% of the questioned have never been asked to donate for a civil society organization. The same research shows that the volunteering is not used enough as a kind of philanthropy in Macedonia and that only 9% of the surveyed had any kind of volunteering experience, while 33% said they would volunteer in future. Nevertheless, 46% of the surveyed say they have never thought of volunteering.
