Planet Earth Day – 22 April

Call for action in the fight against the global warming

For the occasion of 22 April – the Planet Earth Day, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning organized an event under the motto “A campaign to find solution to the climate problems” at the recreational center Saraj in Skopje. Participants were also the municipalities of Saraj and Gjorce Petrov and the Ministry donated waste containers and seedlings for the primary schools in both municipalities. The students who participated in the campaign were awarded prizes for best eco-drawing, eco-mask and eco-slogans.

On the same day, the environmental association “Opstanok” expressed their worries and dissatisfaction of the way citizens act towards the nature and their lack of care for the environment. “This planet is our mutual home and we should all look after it – from youngest to oldest, from poorest to richest. The pollution of the air, water and the soil caused by the humans present a very serious threat to the planet and endanger its survival”, they say at “Opstanok” and call for preventive action that would start from the common citizen and continue to the highest government representatives; they cal for continuous education starting from the pre-school institutions all the way to the academic ones.

This year, the United Nations marked the 22 April under the motto “Call for action in the fight against the global warming” in order to remind to the responsibility we hold towards the Earth.

The Planet Earth Day was promoted in 1970 by the then American Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, who was the first to call for national protests for environmental protection.
