Campaign for the Law for conflict of interests prevention

Think of everybody, not just of yours.

On 13 December 2005, Transparency Macedonia printed the cards which said: Think of everybody, not just of yours”, that is, think primarily of the public interest, not your personal. The whole project, which was part of the ongoing campaign for passing the Law for conflict of interests prevention, was in fact an appeal to the managers and directors, that is to all the official authorities.

During the campaign, the citizens were putting their signatures on the cards, which were then sent to the Government and the Macedonian Parliament. Tribunes, workshops, public debates, etc. were organized as well so that the public can become familiar with the notion of “conflict of interests”. Olivera Kitanova, Transparency Macedonia representative, explained that a conflict of interests is a conflict between the public and the private interest. “Every state official must put in public interest in the first place, that is the interest of the country and the citizens they represent, and then the personal or the family interest.

Apart from the commercial cards and T-shirts which were distributed among the citizens, 10 billboards were put up around Skopje containing the same text as the one written on the cards, serving to the same purpose of appealing to authorities to pass the Law as soon as possible. The working version of the Law for conflict of interests prevention has been already prepared in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice. An expert working group has been also established with representatives from the EU integration sector at the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, representatives from the Legislation Secretariat, MIA, the customs administration, representatives form the Institute for Social and Political-Legal Researches, Transparency Macedonia and the Ministry of Justice. The procedure upon this Law has not entered the legal parliament procedure yet.
