Traditional DEM prizes awarded
“Green” and “Rotten Apple”, according to the merits
The Macedonian Ecologists’ Movement gave the award “Green Apple 2004” to the review “Ecology” for their ten-year successful and unique work as a specialized magazine for education and informing on the protection of the environment, nature and people’s health. The review was assessed a newsletter for the citizens and ecology textbook for the children, as well as the great supporter of MEM activities. “Ecology” has been published once a month since 1994, it is printed on recycled paper. Part of it is the club called “Friends to Children” which unites all eco-societies at schools and participates in many activities dedicated to the environment.
The “Rotten Apple 2004” was awarded to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy for several regulations and books of rules, for pouring out the slag in the Sasa mine, for the lack of control of the draining channels, for the harmful fishing concessions in the lakes Ohrid and Prespa, the lack of cooperation with MEM and the lack of transparency in their work. Although, traditionally, no one comes to receive the “Rotten Apple”, MEM sent it to the Ministry via mail. MEM gave public certificates of gratitude to the lawyer Vasko Gjorgiev for representing the rights of the environmental association “Vila Zora” from Veles and for representing other environmental organizations at the Court without free of charge; to A1 TV station, the Macedonian Radio and Television, to the reporter Dragan Janevski and the newspaper Dnevnik for on-time informing and showing interest in the environmental problems, especially the pollution of Veles, the non-biased and objective presentation of the problems referring the and the cooperation with the environmental organizations, members of MEM. The TVM TV station from Ohrid received a public certificate of gratitude for their continuous promotion of the question concerning the conditions in the Lake Ohrid, such as the pollution of its tributaries, the urbanization of the location, fish fund decrease, cooperation with the environmental association Grasnica and raising the environmental awareness of the population.
