Research The young people in Macedonia expect better future   The young people in Macedonia support the liberal and the market economy, the internationalism, and that is proved by the fact that they mostly trust the banks and the international organizations. On the other hand, they show least trust in the political parties, the Government, the President and the Parliament. Most of them think there is an average standard of living in the country, expecting that it will improve in the future. However, despite the fact that they hope for a better future in their country, as much as 35 % of the questioned young people aged 18-30 respond positively to the whether they had thought of moving out of the country. 39.6% answered “maybe”. As the main reason for leaving Macedonia they state the economic situation which over half of them consider as being unfavorable and with prospects of unemployment. These are some of the results of the research on young people’s expectations in Macedonia carried out by the German Foundation “Friedrich Ebert Stiftung” the Institute for Democracy “Societa Civilis”. 1,197 young people aged 18-30 took part in the research that was carried out last year in May. Only a small number of the young population (15 percent) think that Macedonia is moving in the right direction, while 35.7 % said it is moving in the wrong direction. One should not ignore the young people’s dissatisfaction with the present educational system. As much as 87.9 % of the questioned think that our education needs thorough reforms, whereas only 17.4 % would be educated at the academic institutions in the country. The rest of them would like, if possible, to complete their higher education, or at least part of it, abroad, the most popular destinations being the EU countries and the universities in the United States. On the occasion of publishing the research on the young people’s expectations, a tribune was also organized where Radmila Sekerinska and Teuta Arifi participated. One of the main conclusions from the tribune was that the reforms in the educational systems are to be a top priority, since the young people are obviously not satisfied with the present system.   M.K.
