Discovering the cultural heritage of Sutka Romas

The photography club at the speleological association "Peoni" has been realizing its specific project called "Discovering the cultural heritage of Sutka Romas', dedicated to the cultural heritage of Roma people and their integration. The focus of interest was the young Roma population from the Skopje settlement Sutka, that took place in two photography workshops where they developed their cultural identity through discovering and understanding their own cultural heritage: the place of living, the way of living, tradition, customs, architecture and urban characteristics of the environment.

About 30 pupils from the primary schools "Ramiz and Hamid Brothers" and "26 July" took part at the workshops, discovering the technique of the camera Obscure. Theoretic lectures on photography (history, theory and application of the modern photography) were held and participants wrote short stories, anecdotes, impressions and legends on the printed postcards. The best 30 photographs were exhibited in the mobile city bus number 20 that was visiting different locations in Skopje for four days (The Children Home "11 October", Children Village, Pensioners Home in Cair, the City Square).

The project is supported by FOSIM, the Ministry of Culture and the French Association "Via Patrimuan".
