An anniversary

Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On 10 December 1948, in the first years of the long expected peace after the Second World War, the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization passed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Proclaiming the Declaration was a historic act in that time. The General Assembly called all countries in the world to join the declaration and to publicly promote and publish its text and “to make it possible for it to be spread, transmitted, read and distributed to all schools and other educational institutions, regardless of the political status of the countries or the territories” (http://www.unhcr.ch/udhr/index.htm). The Declaration is one of the most quoted papers in the world and one which has been most used for representing the widest specter of human rights. Its historic and civilization value is huge, but, unfortunately, 60 years after this document was passed, the field it refers to still remains one of the biggest “pains” of the humankind. In many regions of the world, people still fight with the poverty, the hunger; they fight for freedom, for decent living conditions and for many other human rights.

This year, the Declaration celebrates its 58th anniversary on 10 December. However, the great jubilee will be marked in 2008 with the celebration of the 60th anniversary. The Declaration can be read in 300 world languages an all information can be obtained on the web-site http://www.unhchr.ch/udhr/index.htm.
