Albania to Prepare Strategy on Migration

With the support of international partners, Albania is drafting a national strategy on migration. Representatives of European Commission (EC) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) signed an agreement in September providing a grant to develop a migration management system.

” The main aim of this project is to address the urgent need for reform in the field of migration management in Albania through the creation of a National Strategy on Migration that will encompass reform in both fields of immigration and emigration," a joint press release from the two organisations said. The agreement was signed by Hubert Petit, Charge d'Affaires of the EC delegation in Albania, and by Maurizio Busatti, chief of the IOM mission in Tirana. The EC is granting 1m euros for implementation of the project, which has two primary goals: to create the necessary legal and institutional mechanism for the drafting of a national strategy, and to establish the necessary structures and administrative capacities for implementation of the strategy, particularly within the relevant ministries. Within the framework of the project, both the EC and the IOM will assist Albanian authorities, especially the ministry of labour and social affairs.
