Mobilization of resources
Dear readers,
Starting from this issue, the column “Donors” will be replaced with the column “Mobilization of resources”. The Civic World editorial board thought that in the changed context of the civil society functioning, the term “providing resources” covers more than just providing donations. On the contrary, the civil society organizations are trying to mobilize the local resources for their activities as well, by organizing campaigns, implementing economic activities, etc.
Therefore, in the future, this column will provide information not only on the potential donors, but on the civil society organizations’ activities for providing resources (material or human). We hope they will not only be informative, but educational and inspirational for you and your work.
Sincerely The Civic World editorial board

“We want a new dormitory”
For several months now, The Students’ Union at the University of Ss. Kiril and Metodij (SSUKM) has been implementing the campaign for a new dormitory and renovation and sanitation of the existing ones.
“After we had been hearing promises that the condition in the student dormitories would improve, we thought it was high time we took this job in our hands”, said Slavica Arsova from SSUKM. “Improving the student standard, where one of the top priorities is the student housing is what concerns us, the students most, since for the time being, we are using these services, added Arsova.
SSUKM, in cooperation with the State Student Centre “Skopje”, assessed the conditions at the student dormitories, prepared a proposal-project, submit it to the government and the corresponding ministries, and now they are promoting the problem and its solution.
The musical happening “We sing to succeed”, which took place on 18 December 2005, was also part of the SSUKM’s plan to raise money for the realization of this project.
“The tickets for this event cost 100 denars”, says Arsova. By coming to the concert, the students and our professors expressed their readiness to help the realization of this project. All tickets were donations, paid to a special account opened for that purpose. Unfortunately, we did not get the same support from the Universal Hall – we had to pay for using it at regular commercial prizes”. Encouraged by the concert’s success. SSUKM are preparing to organize two more, this time in Stip and Strumica.
“We raised money, but what is more important, we got the colleagues’ support. If there had been any suspicion among the students before, after the concert it almost disappeared. They were simply coming to us and asking what they could do to help solve the problem. Therefore, I am free to say that the human resources are no longer a problem since there are enough people who are and will be engaged in the campaign”.
Besides the concerts, the students are planning to organize voluntary auctions for selling the donated works done by the students from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
The construction of the dormitory and the reconstruction and the sanitation of the existing ones will cost 409,050,000 denars or approximately 6,700,000 euros. At the SSUKM they are aware that it is a large sum of money, which would be difficult to collect. They hope to get support from the Government and the ministries, the business-sector and other donors. “We are determined to start the construction of the dormitory this spring, even if we only have enough money to pull down the old barracks. I thing people are fed up with what “should” or “will” be done. I think they want to see that someone is actually “doing” it, says Slavica Arsova.
