The European Movement of the Republic of Macedonia has marked 9 May The European Day – an occasion for workshops and tribunes                                                         The ninth of May – The European Day was an occasion for the European Movement of the Republic of Macedonia to organize several events. On 8 May at the University of Southeastern Europe, a European Student Seminar on the “Challenges on the way to the EU” took place. The international conference called “The capacity of EU enlargement and the accession of Macedonia and other countries in the region” was held on 9 May in Skopje. The awards for the best caricature and the best European action were awarded at the solemn academy. “We celebrate The European Day – 9 May, but for you, more important would be 5 July when the country should realize fair and democratic elections”, said the OSCE Ambassador in the country, Carlos Pai at the tribune organized on the occasion of The European Day. “The recent surveys in the EU member countries point to the fact that most of the population find that the EU lacks the capacities to adjust the new members and that the rushed accession of the new members would create social, economic and other problems, Therefore, it is very important that we make a realistic estimation of that capacity’s size, if it is a subjective or an objective problem and to make efforts to incorporate in our policies everything that would prevent our performances from creating problems to the Union or the population’s awareness”, said the president of the Movement, Dimitar Mircev. The attitude of professor Tatjana Karakamiseva who teaches at the Faculty of Law in Skopje is that Macedonia, as well the whole region of the Western Balkans is not an absorbing problem for the EU. According to her, Macedonia, regardless of its size, should present results in fulfilling the obligations taken over from the European partnership. “Our size is irrelevant, what matters is the size of the capacity we will show the EU. We have to spread the European awareness among the citizens and point to the fact that we ourselves would benefit from the reforms – the EU membership would come next”, said Karakamiseva.   Z.G.
