14th anniversary of the First Children Embassy in the World - Medjashi
The children are people who have never lead a war
The children are special people. They are neither national nor religious army leaders. They are people who have never fought a revolution, or counter-revolution or lead a war. The children are neither class nor a national issue: they are an issue above all issues.
This is the quotation from the Chapter of the First Children Embassy in the World – “Medjashi”, which celebrated its 14th birthday. “Medjashi” was founded on 29 April 1992 in Skopje. The organization is registered as a world association and it is the first international non-governmental organization in the Republic of Macedonia for protection of children rights.
So far, the title children-ambassadors was given to three children and young people: Mirjana Bosevska, Gjakus Kabasi and Stefan Pleskonjic, and the ambassador is also the actor Kole Angelovski.
“Medjashi” contributed a lot in the process of strengthening the civic awareness on the children rights. It spoke first about a number of actual problems and the violation of the children rights, among which their sexual and economic abuse.
It promoted itself in public with an appeal for support and it organized the action for accepting children-refugees during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1993, it opened the first SOS-phone for children and young people and the psychological counseling center in Macedonia. It contributed with its work in passing many international documents and institutions for children rights protection. As a result, in 2001 “Medjashi” was presented the MCIC Award for Civil Society and Democracy for its long-term contribution in building the civil society in Macedonia.
