Association for fight against cancer – “Borka”
Educational forums have been organized at 5 universities in the country
“The need for establishing “BORKA” has imposed as a result of the permanent health condition in the Republic of Macedonia, taking into consideration the determination of our country to intensify reforms within this field. We realized that in the country there is a need for an association that will deal with all kinds of cancer by and large and will fight against cancer generally, but also individually against all its different forms” – say the members of the newly-formed association, whose activities are directed towards filling the above mentioned gap in the health civil sector and cooperation with all relevant factors involved.
In its work “Borka” is focused on cancer patients, the wider public, public health institutions, non-governmental sector, in order to take active part in making a healthy population aware of the risks and challenges, to a country with a significantly reduced number of patients with the above mentioned diseases. The association marked its existence in the public in September, organizing an educational event as an announcement for 15 September, World Lymphoma Awareness Day and in October it formed the Breast Cancer Alliance, which involved a campaign for raising awareness of early diagnosis of the disease, fundraising for free examinations and a competition for award for journalist’s reporting. Under the motto “We need each other”, on 6 October in Skopje there was a symbolic walk in cooperation with the women’s company AVON and the collected funds from the campaign were aimed at free breast examinations of about 100 women in poor social condition.
A series of university forums were held in November (UKIM, UKO, UJIE, EURM, FON) and messages were sent for early prevention of lung cancer and the students were informed about the risk caused by smoking. Doctors – experts, sociologists, took part at the forum and video projections and interactive discussions were held. Starting from December, within the “Borka” offices in Skopje, members and supporters will realize counseling groups for support of all the interested related to any kind of cancer disease.
