Civic demonstrations against the war in Iraq
Give peace a chance
The appeal of few NGOs - Human Rights Committee from Helsinki, MCIC, OSIMF, Peace Action, Peaceful Civic Initiatives' Board, and European Social Forum - has met with a favorable response among the Skopje citizens. On 15 February this year, they went out on the streets to express their protest against USA military intervention in Iraq. Hundreds of citizens of all ages, nationalities, different ethnic communities, as well as many Europeans and Americans, protested in front of the USA Embassy in Skopje, in front of the Macedonian Government, the Parliament and at the square Macedonia and said that they all equally disagree with the violence and that they share the desire for peace, no matter which part of the world is concerned. Protests against the war in Iraq took place in about 600 cities throughout the world. Citizens of the world made appeals against "bloodshed for oil", against the violent US military policy, and according to some estimations such global civic peaceful action has not been recorded since the war in Vietnam in the sixties.
