“The Communal Waste and the Dumps – Challenge for the Future”
On 17 April this year, at the Macedonian Ecologists Movement (MEM) offices in Skopje, the Ecologists’ Association ‘Kitka” from Skopje promoted the successfully completed project called “The Communal Waste and the Dumps – Challenge for the Future”.
As Mr. Pero Stojcevski, EA “Kitka” president said, the project’s goal was to popularize the problem concerning the dumps and the solid waste in two regions in Macedonia - Kumanovo-Kriva Palanka and Struga-Ohrid region, and direct the environmental problems to the authorities in charge. The dumps in these regions are potential seats of diseases, so there was a plan to build modern dumps with the local inhabitants and eight municipalities from the above-mentioned regions, like the only dump of that kind in Macedonia – “Drisla” in Skopje.
As “Sitka” president said, there is a plan to build a regional dump, for which the local authorities have already started the preparation plan for fizzibility study.
Within the same project, EA “Kitka” promoted their brochure “Dumps in the Kumanovo-Kriva Palanka and Struga-Ohrid region” where they illustrate the dumps in these places. The brochure also presents the results from the local inhabitants’ survey, that is, their opinions on the dumps conditions, the communal waste and the ways of its treatment. The survey was conducted by “Kitka”.
This project was realized within the Democratic Cooperation Program that the Institute for Sustainable Communities realizes with financial assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
