The international Week for Fighting against Cancer marked

The breast cancer attacks the younger population

The number of registered women with breast cancer in 2006 in Macedonia is 600 and it is continuously growing, primarily within the young population. These data were reported on the occasion of the traditional marking of the international Week Against Cancer, which took place between 1-7 March.  The latest data were presented by the civil society organization “Zivotna Iskra”, which also informed on the activities for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of the breast cancer in our country. According to the association, in the period between 1998 and 2006, there were 19 patients with breast cancer registered in Macedonia aged 21 to 30, 208 patients aged 31-40, 969 patients aged 41-50, 2.262 patients aged 51-60, 1.970 patients aged 61-70, while the 30% of the total number of women with breast cancer fall women aged 70 plus.

The members of “Zivotna Iskra” find the fact that the number of newly diseased women younger than 19 is growing quite worrying. Their number has grown from 9.8 to 15 percent in 100,000 inhabitants. The researches done by this organization show that with the early diagnosis, the fatal outcome can be avoided in 30 to 40 percent of the diseased. “This year, the Ministry of Health has doubled their finances and provided 630 million denars for that kind of therapy and for the National Programme for fight against breast cancer, which is in the final phase of preparation”, said the Deputy – Minister of Health, Vladimir Lazarevikj at the press-conference of “Zivotna Iskra”.
